Steve Mannheimer brings a lifetime of artistic practice and experience to his contemporary interpretations of classic painting themes.
In his works, the traditional images of landscape and floral still life are explored for their expressive possibilities yet, at the same time, embraced in their moments of pensive calm. The ballet between active interpretation and restrained contemplation creates the basic dynamic of Mannheimer's art.
The same dialogue between creation and analysis has driven his professional career for the past 40 years. He has exhibited his paintings and drawings nationally in gallery and museum settings. He has scaled the ranks of the academic art world, teaching painting and drawing for a quarter century at the Herron School of Art, and serving for eight years as president of the Mid-America College Art Association, a 70-year-old professional society of university artists. For 18 years he wrote a weekly column on art and architecture for The Indianapolis Star, the state's leading newspaper, also writing for the national publications Garden Design magazine and Landscape Architecture magazine. He has directed and consulted on a range of public art projects, and has lectured in numerous professional and popular venues.
